After the launch of the original iPad, tablets were expected to replace PCs in the hands of most users before too long, and there was seemingly no limit to the growth of this new market segment.

The latest generation of laptops are lighter, thinner and more portable than ever before, and with their fast SSD drives just as quick to power up as a tablet.
With the iPad Pro those power limitations have finally been lifted. An optional keyboard that attaches magnetically is available as well.

There is still no memory card slot nor can you attach an external hard drive but, at least for those who are willing to transfer part of their work flow to the cloud, the hardware for serious editing tasks appears to be all in place.
What about the software then?

Well, this is where things get more difficult. For this to change, software makers like Adobe would have to make their image editing desktop applications available for the iPad Pro and iOS 9.
We’ve already heard rumors that this may be on the way, but the task is complicated by the fact that, due to hardware requirements, these full software versions would likely only work with the iPad Pro but not the other iPad models, seriously limiting the sales potential for such apps.

Alternatively, software makers could offer apps that provide a basic feature set on standard iPads and unlock additional functionality on the iPad Pro.
This is not a tried-and-tested app sales model though, and is therefore not without its risks either.

No need to lug around my MacBook Pro anymore for tethered photography with instant wireless full screen viewing, on-the spot correction, and immediate upload to my client’s server, and my own cloud for back-in-the-studio use.
There was no mention in the article of using the iPad Pro for tethered shooting.

There are now two other drives made for the iPad Pro that connect directly to the Lightning port, haven’t tried them yet. I clamp on my iPad with an Octa, connect a Weye Feye to camera, and wow!
Between the Adobe apps, Pixelmator, and MaxCurve I have all the app features I need, and optimized for touch and pencil. It’s a drag when I’m forced to use my archaic-feeling desktop Photoshop.
I’m documenting museum installations and art using this process. I have a birding try to Donegal coming, and I’ve been trying to get used to saving photos from sd adapter to ipad and then back to external hardrive.
Another apple joke!! Proprietary software, no hard drive, no sdxc portthe list goes on and on! Independent, isolated use of laptops and tablets is still essential to productivity!!
Not true. Unless Apple changed their “no usb” policy in iOS, there is little incentive for Adobe to port proper editing software.
Try out Lightroom Mobile if you wish – you have to buy outrageously expensive USB cable only to discover that the only application able to see your camera is Apple Camera app.
That will import and convert your photos without any input from you, and then you have to copy them over to be used in Adobe app.
Hopefully Apple will allow vetted apps to scan USB directly and allow direct file sharing between apps, but I wouldn’t hold my breath Always be nteresting to hear the “who has the best editing platform” argument.

Should be the who can make my photos look better argument. Seriously how would you guys even have made a living in the film days with your heavy reliance on post editing?
If you cannot use one of your photos straight out of your camera without running it through software then you should give up.
The only editing i do is cropping. You should all take a step back and learn how to take good photos rather than waste your time arguing about editing.
That takes deep post processing knowledge and having the eye to know when to stop and is not obtainable straight out of camera. But I agree: you should get it right in your camera.

Most photographers don’t know the fundamentals. A good point indeed for many photos but for media photography where airbrushing and colour enhancing etc.
You were able to use your photos straight out of camera in the film days? I never was.

A process where I had tremendous control over pushing etc. After that, I had to develop the resulting negative into an image, and in that process I would frequently use tools and my hands to doge and burn to make the image exactly as I wanted.
How did you do it?

When you pulled the film out of the canister, how did you prevent it from being destroyed instantly, and how on EARTH did you show the result to people?
There has NEVER been a situation where you used your photos straight out of your camera, but the Polaroid and positive film are the closest.
Here are some possible scenarios:. Result will depend selection of film, how you develop the film, on how you develop the positive image what paper you chose etc.
These are done in LR today using filters, exposure change, color temperature etc.

Also, film selection – same as LR with a clueless LR user. Claiming there is such a thing even in digital as straight out of camera is just clueless nonsense.
Even JPGS are processed heavily. Isn’t it interesting how anything that smacks of a positive Apple review brings out the trolls? Why are they so threatened by each new Apple product?

Just because the world loves them and buys them, paying prices that sustain new product creation? Not everyone requires full Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom on the road – for many of us, we simply want to check our daily files, and send home some fixed images.
For that, Photogene and Instaflash Pro do amazingly well. I have more than raw and high-res jpegs on it. Today, the vast majority of images are for web use.
For the same reason why stylus tablets other than Apple never got positive reviews even though they could run apps up to and including full Adobe on high resolution screens – years ago.
Fanboyism exists in commenters and reviewers alike. Giant iPad? I’m sure some people will get some use out of it. Some people like yourself may altar their process so they can work around only having a tablet on the go and have it work very well.
The problem I have is that the iPad pro is being marketed as Surface Pro competition, and well, it’s not. It’s just a giant tablet at the end of the day and does not have the same versatility.

Maybe they should just market it as the largest iPad ever instead? When I am traveling for pleasure, I don’t want to sit in an Airbnb editing images – I want to be out making them.
That’s why Apple still makes actual computers. But it doesn’t have a layer manager, so you won’t be able to do double exposures or masking projects. Here’s where I disagree.

You really do not end up with a compromise. I’ve had the SP1 since launch, no issues. No issues with the SP3 as well. Why work well together when it can literally be together?
If I didn’t occasionally game, I would get a dock and run my SP3 for my desktop too. It’s more than fast enough and responsive enough.
My bad, I thought Mordi was for real. Using a single, unqualified experience to dismiss software and harware happily used by hundreds of millions of users without problems would be a typical indicator of fanboy-ism.

Like I said, they are everywhere. And just like my commentary on this, they are platform-independent. Just ignore fanboys and look at the actual facts is my advice, whatever platform you want to use.
No the camera connection kit is no usb host. I imagine I would be able to retouch one large file and store handful that’s it.
Maybe if the Air goes this might get some minor hardware and meagre storage upgrades. This is the area where Apple has put in the most effort, and it shows. Apple ipad pro 10 5 ffor photo editing The iPad Pro will undoubtedly inspire further advancements in this field.
Hardly a workflow. Apple has bent over backwards to incapacitate the iPad for fear of canabalizing their laptop sales have succeed admirably. Maybe if the Air goes this might get some minor hardware and meagre storage upgrades.
Nice looking screen though. Hardware may be sufficient, especially if somebody uses a camera with subMP sensor and doesn’t do compositing, focus stacking, panoramas or anything making excessive use of Ps filters.

And yes, 13 inch display is not perfect, but good enough to use on the go. The problem is software which is not a desktop version of Photoshop.
Anything else means adding yet another thing to your workflow and time to learn yet another program.

Not mentioning spending additional money on this software. From the photographer’s point of view solutions like Surface Pro or Cintiq are simply better.
